The Invisible Village

The tall man found himself on the other side of the portal, in a fog so thick his clothes became damp in a few short seconds. The sun was visible, although barely, through the fog. Each step on the lush green grass sent dew spraying in either direction. It was near frigid here, as the tall man discovered, and what's more he had absolutely no sense of direction. As he continued to walk he realized that he could be traveling in circles endlessly without him realizing it. He was hopelessly lost.

"Lost now, are we?" The tall man stopped. Who had spoken? Did the tall man not already single out the fact that he was the only one for miles? He turned circles, waving the fog away in hopes of seeing the source of this voice.
"Who is there?" The tall man asked as he gave up the search.
"Just me." Said the voice, followed by a giggle or two.
The tall man was puzzled. Here he was, in the middle of nowhere, being followed by an invisible person.
"Know the way to the nearest village, by any chance?"
"Sure I do! Follow me..." The voice faded as if caught in the wind, and a path was cleared through the fog.

The tall man followed this pathway for about a mile, unspeaking. Over hills, dips, and more hills through a tunnel of fog he silently marched. The sun grew a little brighter, the world a little warmer, but the air was still heavy with water. The tall man seemed a little out of his element.

Eventually though, the fog thinned a little bit. The tall man looked around and smiled. He found himself at a village, a village hidden in the fog. Thank goodness, The tall man thought to himself. He stepped into the village, And immediately noticed two things about it. First of all, the fog was gone, although it was still visible around the perimeter of the village. And secondly, in its place was five inches worth of water, and several dozen more worth of mud. The tall man was clearly agitated. He was, however, not nearly as agitated as he was about to be.

"CANNONBALL!"

The tall man looked up to see a young man, perhaps 15 years old, run and jump off a nearby hut, and into the murky water a few meters away from him. The man, who was already knee deep in mud, got soaked from head to toe, or at least head to whatever wasn't submerged. After a few seconds the young man reappeared, spit out a mouthful of mud as if he had just emerged out of his neighborhood swimming pool, and flashed a big pearly smile in the tall man's direction. This smile though, quickly faded. He cast a murderous gaze at the young man and left the village.

"Hey hey hey there! Wait a second! Where you going, dude?"
"Yeah man, it was just a little joke!"
The tall man stopped a few feet into the fog and turned to look at the young man, and where he supposed the invisible young man was.
He stood there for a minute, practically seething.
"Whoa there... you okay mister?"
"Perhaps we should leave him alone," The unseen one said. A wall of fog separated the tall man and the young man, and then the tall man turned and left.

I can find my way to the boy and the wolf alone. If I stay here any longer I might lose control. And at that the tall man disappeared into the fog, balling and unballing his fists.

. . . . .

"We aren't going to leave him alone, are we?" The young man said with a sly grin.
"Of course not!" The unseen one said with a similar, yet invisible smile.
The young man climbed up onto a nearby hut and performed a dive into the mud. Simultaneously footsteps could be seen vanishing into the fog.

. . . . .

After several hours of wandering, the tall man lay in the grass. Exhausted. Without hope. For all he knew there was nothing but grass and fog for miles upon miles around him. Where was civilization? Where were the boy and the wolf?...

...Where was he?
